The initiative comes as FedEx and other companies in the shipping industry face challenges, including cost-cutting measures and industry competition, evidenced by recent layoffs at rival UPS. FedEx’s leadership emphasizes the importance of adapting to new technologies to navigate the evolving business environment.
The AI literacy program includes personalized, role-based training that is updated regularly to keep pace with technological advancements. Training is accessible through Accenture’s LearnVantage platform and incorporates interactive sessions that can be attended during work hours, allowing flexibility for employees.
Additionally, employees are encouraged to form “communities of practice” to collaborate on new ideas, and there are hackathons to discover new technology applications. Senior executives participated in the program’s development by spending two days in Silicon Valley to ensure effective partnerships with compatible firms.
Although still in its early stages, early signs indicate that the program is positively influencing employee aspirations, with more frontline workers pursuing corporate roles. FedEx is assessing progress using metrics related to AI engagement, focusing on continuous improvement rather than just measuring success.
In parallel, other companies, including DHL Express and Citigroup, are also enhancing their employee’s AI skills, illustrating a growing trend across various industries. FedEx’s ongoing education initiative aims to equip all employees, from drivers to customs clearance staff, with relevant technology training to fully leverage AI capabilities in their roles.
