NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on Monday regarding the ongoing crisis in West Asia, which began on February 28 with joint attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran. The Prime Minister emphasized the significant impact of these hostilities on the global economy and the well-being of people, noting the particular challenges faced by India.
Modi highlighted the presence of nearly 1 crore Indians in the Gulf region, stating that the Indian government is providing full support to its nationals there. Indian missions in the affected areas are in constant communication with the diaspora and have established emergency services, including helplines and outreach rooms. Since the onset of the conflict, more than 375,000 Indians have returned to India, with about 1,000 coming back from Iran alone.
In response to the crisis, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has canceled Class 10 and 12 examinations in Gulf countries. Modi described the region as crucial for India’s trade, particularly for crude oil and gas imports, and acknowledged the increasing challenges to ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Prime Minister assured that the Indian government has prioritized the supply of LPG, petrol, and diesel, alongside increasing domestic production to mitigate potential shortages. Efforts have been made to ensure a smooth transition in the supply chain, despite instability in the region.
Modi reiterated India’s stance on the importance of dialogue and diplomacy. He condemned attacks on civilians and infrastructure and has engaged with leaders of West Asian countries to encourage de-escalation and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He stressed that endangering lives in this war is against humanity’s interests.
In his address, Modi urged for a unified response from Parliament and the international community to address the crisis effectively, reflecting India’s commitment to humanitarian concerns and global peace.
